Infrared Monitoring for Recovery Boilers: Process Optimization & Safety
Monitoring the combustion process in recovery boilers (black liquor boilers) is a critical task in pulp production. Our specialized system provides precise online temperature monitoring and visual assessment of the char bed to increase efficiency and minimize emissions.
The Challenge
Optimal conditions must be maintained during black liquor combustion to:
- Utilize energy efficiently: Generation of high-pressure steam for electricity and process heat production.
- Prevent emissions: Reduction of sulfur dioxide and other pollutants.
- Guarantee safety: Prevention of dangerous smelt-water explosions. Therefore, the sensors used must not, under any circumstances, be water-cooled.
The Solution: Turnkey PYROINC 640BL System
We provide a complete, turnkey system specifically developed for the extreme conditions found in recovery boilers.
- Specialized Camera: The air-cooled infrared furnace camera operates in the 3.9 µm spectral range. Most gases are transparent in this window, allowing for a significantly better view than conventional TV or NIR systems.
- Automation & Protection: An automatic retraction device protects the camera in the event of malfunctions or cooling media failure by autonomously moving it out of the furnace.
- Media Monitoring: The system includes a control cabinet for continuous media monitoring to ensure the safe operation of the air-cooling and sensor components.
Precise Measurement Technology: * Temperature range: 600°C to 1,450°C (1,112°F to 2,642°F) (others available on request).
- Resolution: High detail accuracy with 640×480 pixels.
- Optics: Patented air-purging system keeps the lens free from deposits.
Evaluation & Software
The included evaluation unit with specialized software enables:
- An online image for personnel in the control room.
- Transmission of temperature values to the higher-level process system via interfaces such as WAGO, Profibus, or ProfiNet.
